5/5/17

Good afternoon. Please make sure you read these announcements carefully! There is a lot of information for the next three weeks.

The genetics unit test is Monday 5/8/17 for odd classes and Tuesday 5/9/17 for even classes. Period 1 can use their notebook; please make sure that you have all of the notes AND you bring your notebook to class. Periods 5 - 8 can use a cheat sheet. That is one piece of paper, front and back. If you type it, it must be a font > 10 and margins of 1 inch. I will be checking so make sure you are following the rules. The multiple choice section of the test is on a scantron so bring a pencil to class for the test. Here is the link to the Kahoot to review for the test.

We will spend about 3 days going through ecology. Our schedule looks like this....
Wed (5/10) and Thursday (5/11) - Glue in ecology notes, go over PowerPoint, handout crossword and coloring. We will also watch a short video about Gorongosa National Park.
  • Crossword will be due 5/24/17 and 5/25/17; colorings are also due then

Friday (5/12) and Tuesday (5/16) - creating food webs and chains using evidence

Monday (5/15) and Thursday (5/18) - Create a symbiosis foldable, watch Planet Earth and identify symbiotic relationships

Friday (5/19) and Monday (5/22) - End of Course Exams (EoC). EoC review packets are now due the day of the test. I will not accept them late. They count as a test grade for the 4th nine weeks. The EoC counts as your semester exam grade (20% of the semester)

Tuesday is an even half day - I do not have any Biology classes this day

Wednesday (5/24) and Thursday (5/25)
  • Ecology crossword is due
  • Ecology colorings are due
  • Final notebook quiz
  • You will turn in your notebook check sheet - this is also a test grade
  • Watch "March of the Penguins"

Friday May 26 - half day/last day!!!!!!!

Friday May 12th is the LAST DAY I WILL ACCEPT LATE WORK! It is also the last day I will do late stamps. I am only stamping for this nine weeks. I will not stamp for anything before 3/27. This is a firm deadline. Make sure everything is turned in by 3:30 on Friday May 12th. I will be doing late stamps during lunch all next week.

If you want to retake the DNA quiz, you can just come in during lunch next week and do that.

I think that is all. If you have questions, either email me (ablack1@lcps.net) or text me through the remind app. I will send out a text when I have finished grading.

Did you know that May 9th is National Teacher Appreciation day? Whoa!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Black

5/2/17

Good afternoon. First off, if you has scheduled to retake the Evolution Recap quiz, I apologize for not being there today. I will there the rest of the week. I also wanted to let you know what is going on for the next three weeks.

Friday May 12th will be an odd day. Friday May 19th will be an even day. Tuesday May 23rd is a half day as is Friday May 26th.

Our EoC has been moved. Even classes will take the Biology EoC on Friday May 19th. Odd classes will take the Biology EoC on Monday May 22nd. The EoC review is still due on Friday May 12th for odd classes, but now it is due on Thursday May 11th for even classes. I will try and grade them in class those days so that I can send them back home for you to study. Don't forget the EoC review counts as a test grade and the EoC will count as the final exam grade (20% of your semester grade).

Everything else is still the same. We will take the genetics unit test on Monday May 8th and Tuesday 9th. The test will cover the following sets of notes:
  • Gregor Mendel
  • Nonmendelian Genetics
  • Meiosis
  • Evolution of Populations
  • Classification
  • DNA
  • RNA
1st period will be allowed to use their notebooks on the test. Periods 5-8 will be allowed one sheet of paper, both sides as a cheat sheet for the test. The test will not have Chi-Square or Hardy Weinberg problems.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask or email.

Good morning! I hope you are staying warm on this very cool weekend!

We are down to the last 4 weeks of school. It's been fun but I am definitely looking forward to summer!

Grades are updated. If you missed the DNA quiz, you have this week at lunch to get it done. It's a 10 question quiz so it doesn't take that long.

This week we are focusing on RNA and how DNA leads to RNA leads to Proteins leads to Phenotypes. All honors classes should be taking the RNA notes. You can find those here. I will be stamping for them on Monday and Tuesday.

Here's our plan for the week:
Monday/Tuesday
  • Period 1 - take notes, go over ppt and start crossword
  • Periods 5 - 8 - Go though ppt and work on how DNA is transcribed and translated
Wednesday/Thursday
  • How mutations in the Rock Pocket Mouse color gene lead to different phenotypes
Friday
  • Turn in crossword
  • Get coloring stamps
  • Review Kahoot - what are we reviewing for? The genetics unit test on Monday 5/8 and Tuesday 5/9 WOO HOOOOOO!

The genetics unit test will cover the following notes:
  • Gregor Mendel
  • Nonmendelian Genetics
  • Meiosis
  • Evolution of Populations
  • Classification
  • DNA
  • RNA

As of right now we are scheduled for the EoC on May 15th and 16th. I am trying to get that moved farther back. I will let you know when it is finalized.

Finally, here is the form for retaking the evolution recap quiz. There are four sessions to choose from. The form closes on Monday at 5 pm so make sure you sign up before then.

Thats all for now. Have a great Sunday!

Mrs. Black

4/22/17

Happy Earth Day! Did you know that we only have 15 more classes before the end of the school year? That's just crazy! And we still have much to learn! :)

I have completed grading all the work. There are SEVERAL finch papers with no name on them. Please stop by Monday at lunch and check out the Beyonce fume hood to see if your paper is there.

Some of you may have a 0 on the Evolution Recap quiz. If you have a zero, one of two things has happened.
1. You were absent. You need to come in at lunch Monday - Wednesday to make that up.
2. You didn't finish. You need to come in at lunch Monday - Wednesday to finish.

Now I know several of you are chomping at the bit to retake the quiz. I will let you know when I am ready for that. Keep your eyes and ears open!

This week we are starting our lessons on DNA. I am very excited for this section! For the first time ever, we will be using K'Nex kits to model the structure and replication of DNA! But, in order to play you MUST complete the DNA notes. You can find those here. I will be stamping for them Monday and Tuesday at the beginning of class.

Our work for this week includes:
1. DNA crossword - due Friday
2. DNA colorings - due Friday
3. DNA POGIL - in your notebook
4. DNA Modeling Lab - Due by Friday (if not earlier)

Time permitting we may have a quiz over DNA on Friday. I will let you know once we see how the DNA modeling goes.

EXTRA CREDIT ALERT! If you want to earn 5 extra credit points on the last quiz (and yes these can be used on the retake), answer the following question:

What is this animal?
What is its complete taxonomic break down?
Why is it threatened?

Pangolin_(Gir_Forest,_Gujarat,_India).jpg

The first 10 people to answer earn the extra credit points. I will start accepting answers at 12:00 pm on Sunday, April 23rd. If you answer before that time, you will be disqualified.

Finally, here is the schedule for this week. This is our final week of PARCC!

Thanks for reading and see you Monday/Tuesday!

Mrs. Black

4/9/17

Ahhhhhh! Another week has passed. Hopefully you have enjoyed your 4 day weekend and you are refreshed and ready for another exciting week in Biology!!!!!!

We start PARCC this week. This means that the schedule is all messed up. BUT you will see all of your classes, just for different amounts of time depending on the week! Here is the schedule for this week!

Screen Shot 2017-04-06 at 12.19.46 PM.png

We only have school four days this week and then another 4 day weekend. And the end of the semester is near so things are started to get a little hectic. On that note, grades are updated. There are way too many people not turning in their work. When I look at my grade book, there are WAAAAYYYY to many D's and F's. It's time to kick it into high gear peeps! I need all of your work every week.

For the honors classes, you are supposed to take the Classification notes. You can find them here. They are long, but since you had four days..... I will be stamping for these notes in class Monday and Tuesday.

I sense that many of you are still having issues with Hardy Weinberg. If you scored low on the Hardy Weinberg problems, you can redo that assignment AFTER you attend a tutoring session this week at lunch. I will have tutoring Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at lunch for those of you struggling with Hardy Weinberg and who want to redo that assignment.

This weekend we have a who is it for a free work pass. This pass can be used to replace a 0 already in the grade book, or for getting out of an assignment you didn't quite get done. The first ten people to CORRECTLY answer the questions will earn the free work pass. Since the remind is going out at 11:00 am, only those answers that show up after 11:00 am on Sunday, 4/9/17 will be accepted. All you have to do is tell me who is this woman, what was her contribution to science and why didn't she earn the Noble Prize. Fill out the form below the picture to be eligible to win. :)

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 9.33.17 PM.png

Here is the schedule for Wednesday.

Screen Shot 2017-04-01 at 9.33.25 PM.png

In class on Monday and Tuesday we will watch a short video on the Galapagos Finches, and then do a short simulation of a bird population. This will probably take Wednesday as well. All bunny labs are due on Wednesday, and for the honors class the Hardy Weinberg Practice Problems are due Wednesday as well. If you are having problems understanding Hardy Weinberg, here is a video describing the equations and here is a video showing you how to solve the problems. As always I am available at lunch (only Monday and Wednesday this week), or you can try and catch me in the morning. You are also welcome to contact me through the remind app or email. There is no class on Thursday and Friday of this week due to CAPS registration. Make sure to meet with your advisor at the time you scheduled.

Since I have SOOOOOO many of my student reading these announcements *SARCASM* I am handing out 10 extra credit points in the test category for the first FIVE students who can CORRECTLY identify this animal and fill out the form below. This offer is only good for the first FIVE students who CORRECTLY answer the question.

What the heck is this?

Good morning all! I hope that you are all enjoying your spring break. I wanted to let you know that grades for the 3rd nine weeks have been finalized. It was a long, hard quarter but we did a lot of work and that shows in the number of grades! Good job everyone!

We are in the last quarter of the year, and time is going to start flying by. For periods 5 - 8, please remember to take the Evolution of Population notes before our next class meeting. I will be stamping on Monday/Tuesday.

If you are not sure what stamps you should have, please check here for period 1 and here for periods 5-8.

There will be no school on April 6th and 7th for registration. We will be running a modified schedule on Monday/Tuesday April 3rd and 4th. Classes will only be 56 minutes long. Advisory on both of those days will be 2 hours long. This time is needed for your advisor to meet with you and start picking out your classes. You will also be making appointments with your advisors to bring your parents in to sign off on your classes for the next year. It is really important that you make these meetings so that you can register for the classes you want and need. Wednesday April 5th we will run a Friday schedule with advisory.

Just a reminder that if you are absent, you are still responsible for the work that you missed. If you are absent, please come and see me ASAP to see what you need to do.

Enjoy these last few days and I will see you next week!

Mrs. Black

3/4/17

Good morning! I wanted to let you know that grades are updated. I have completed grading all the work that was turned in this week, including all late work. You many have a 0 for work that you missed due to an absence this week. That 0 is just an incentive for you to get that work turned in!

We studied a few difficult topics this week. I wanted to introduce you to several resources that can be helpful, especially if you missed a day.

On Tuesday/Wednesday in Honors Biology we watched an Amoeba Sisters video on incomplete and codominance. If you missed that, you can find that video here.

Here are a few other resources on incomplete and codominance.

On Thursday/Friday we watched an Amoeba Sisters video on dihybrid crosses. If you missed that, you can find that video here.

Here are a few other resources on dihybrid crosses.

Now for a few reminders.
  • Graded tests went back this past week. Test corrections are due on Friday 3/10. LATE TEST CORRECTIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
  • Nonmendelian Crossword is due Friday 3/10. I am not accepting late crosswords this time, so make sure it is done and turned in on time!
  • I will be stamping for colorings on Friday 3/10.
  • There will be a quiz over genetics on Friday 3/10. Here are the topics that will be covered.
    • Punnett Squares - genotypic and phenotypic frequencies
      • Mendelian, nonmendelian and dihybrid
    • Chi-square (honors only)
    • Genetics vocabulary
  • All late work is due by 3/10. I WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK PAST THIS DATE!

Last but certainly not least, I have hidden the Class Dojo extra credit points. It was causing stress so it is hidden until I finalize grades for this quarter.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions, please email me at ablack1@lcps.net, or come and see me at lunch. Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Black

2/27/17

Good morning! I managed to catch up with grading on Friday so grades are updated in the grade book.

Period 1 - this week we are starting with Nonmendelian notes on Wednesday. On Friday we will be looking at how to complete Dihybrid crosses.

Periods 5, 6, 7 and 8 - you need to have the Nonmendelian notes copied by class time Tuesday/Wednesday. You will be practicing incomplete dominance and codominant Punnett Squares. On Thursday/Friday we will start dihybrid Punnett Squares.

Parents, I will not be available on Monday for conferences. If you would like to set up a meeting, please email me at ablack1@lcps.net and we will set something up.

Thanks all for now!

Mrs. Black

2/20/17

Good evening. After many hours, half a bag of ruffles, a full bag of Cadbury mini eggs, and at least 7 cups of hot tea, I am finished grading the test. Grades have been updated in StudentVUE. I also have completely caught up on grading late work. I will have individualized grade sheets in your crates starting tomorrow. If you haven't taken the test, or you didn't finish, you have this week to get that done. Friday is the deadline. After Friday February 24 if you have a 0 for the Cellular Energy Test, it will remain a 0. I am available each morning starting at 8 am and at lunch all week.

I will have the tests returned to everyone starting 2/28/17 with instructions on test corrections. Remember you can earn .5 points back for each missed question by completing test corrections.

This week we are focused on Punnett Squares. We will be looking at the Stickleback fish this week and in the honors class we will be using our new Chi-Square skills as well. Don't forget your crossword is due Tuesday/Wednesday.

Parents, I will be unavailable February 27th for parent teacher conferences. I need to still deal with some issues and I am using that day instead of losing an instructional day. If you want to conference with me, please email me at ablack1@lcps.net or call the school to set up an appointment. I am also available for phone conferences.

That's all for now! See you tomorrow or Wednesday!

2/6/17

Good evening everyone. I am opening up for quiz retakes. If you want to retake the cellular energy (cellular respiration and photosynthesis) quiz, or if you missed it the first time, please use the form below to sign up.

I am planning on being back at work on Wednesday, so all the postponed stamping will be taking place Wednesday and Thursday. Make sure you are ready for that. Also, if you missed the notebook quiz last week, come and see me so you can take that. It only requires 5 minutes.

We will have a test over cellular respiration, photosynthesis and mitosis next Monday/Tuesday. I will give you more details later this week.

See you soon!

Mrs. Black

1/29/17

Hello again everyone! I wanted to touch base with you and let you know a few things.

This week we are continuing with our study of photosynthesis. On Monday and Tuesday we will experimenting with leaves to determine the rate of photosynthesis under different light sources. On Wednesday and Thursday we will taking a notebook quiz and completing a foldable that compares photosynthesis and cellular respiration. On Friday I will be stamping for the two colorings, and for the two foldable we did as a class. This way I can make sure that everyone has the notes taken, and you get two easy stamps. Win-Win! You will also be taking the cellular energy quiz (Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis). The quiz is 20 multiple choice questions. It is in your best interest to start studying now. Both of these topics are very complex.

I have entered grades and there are WAYYYYYY too many zeros for easy assignments. All cellular energy work is due by Friday. Anything that hasn't been turned in must be turned in by Friday February 3rd or it remains a zero. Interim grades go in on February 9th so make sure you don't wait too late.

During the months of February and March I have jury duty. This means that twice a week I have to call in at 5:30 pm to see if I have to report the next day. So I may just randomly be absent during these two months. Remember to be on your best behavior with any sub and to make sure all of your work is turned in.

If you have any questions, please come and see me before school or at lunch. Have a great Sunday!

Mrs. Black

12/11/16

Good afternoon everyone! I wanted to let you know that I have updated grades in studentVUE. We are in the home stretch of the semester. This week we are reviewing for the midterm Monday and Tuesday, then taking the midterm Wednesday and Thursday. The midterm is 70 multiple choice questions and will be taken on a scantron. Friday you will do test corrections to earn back .5 points on missed questions.

1st period, you are allowed to use your notebook on the quiz, but you cannot use any previous quizzes or tests so make sure to take those out of your notebook before Wednesday. Periods 5-8 you are allowed one cheat sheet, both sides. I will give you a blank page Monday/Tuesday.

As always, if you are caught using a phone during any part of the test, that is an automatic 0.

There will be not quiz retakes on the membrane quiz due to a lack of time. Plus the semester exam is more important than a quiz. I will have the quizzes filed by tomorrow. If someone wants to come in and help filing I would appreciate it. If you missed the quiz Friday, retakes are Monday and Tuesday either in the morning or at lunch. Plus I need to take a grade on your notebook. I expect to see a lot of faces at lunch over the next few days!

if you have any questions, please email me or come see me. Don't wait till the last minute to take care of issues. Tempers get short as the semester gets close to ending and we all get stressed. Have a great Sunday and see you tomorrow!

Mrs. Black

12/4/16

Good afternoon! I have just finished updating grades in Synergy. This includes all late work and quiz retakes.

We have only 12 school days left before Winter Break! The deadline for all late work fromthe 2nd nine weeks is December 9th. I WILL NOT TAKE ANY LATE WORK PAST THIS POINT. Please make sure that you turn in any missing assignments by that date.

This week we are focused on osmosis. You will use the principles of osmosis to determine the concentrations of 6 unknown solutions. This lab will take two days. Friday December 9th I will be stamping for the last two colorings, and I will be taking a grade on your stamp sheet. If you have missed stamps from the 2nd nine weeks, you need to come see me at lunch or in the morning to get those missing stamps. There is also a membrane quiz on Friday. It's gonna be a busy week so get some rest! Have a great Sunday night and see you tomorrow!

Mrs. Black

11/27/16

Good afternoon! I hope that everyone had a safe and filling Turkey day.

This week are focused on the cell membrane and how things make it through the membrane.

Monday/Tuesday - Diffusion Lab and Tonicity Foldable

Wednesday/Thursday - Cell membrane POGIL (1st) or Cell Transport POGIL (5-8)

Friday - Cell Membrane Foldable

I have also updated grades. If you took the quiz late or turned in late work before the holiday, that is all graded and entered into StudentVUE. If you want to retake the cell structure and function quiz, please use the form below to sign up. The form closes Tuesday at 5 pm.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Don't blow away today and I will see you on Monday/Tuesday.

Mrs. Black

11/20/16

Good afternoon! It's almost Turkey Day! WOO HOO!

Just to let you know I have updated grades in StudentVUE. If you didn't get a grade for your animal and plant cell foldable on Friday, Monday 11/21 and Tuesday 11/22 are your last chance. After Tuesday the grade will remain a 0.

Looking at the notebook quiz grades, there are still some students who are struggling to keep up with the notebook. The frst 5 minutes of each class are dedicated time to get your notebook in order. Come in, get the papers out of your crate, sit down and start getting your notebook in order. I have also noticed quite a few people showing up to class without their notebook. This needs to stop immmediately. Coming to class without your science notebook is like coming to school naked. DON'T DO IT! :)

If you are behind on your TOC, here is the TOC for 1st period, and here is the TOC for periods 5, 6, 7 and 8.

If you are note sure what stamps you should have, here is the notebook check sheet for 1st period, and here is the notebook check sheet for periods 5, 6, 7 and 8.

If you want to know what the agenda was for a particular day, or you want to know what we are doing after Thanksgiving, check out the class calendar page.

There will be a summative semester exam. This exam will cover EVERYTHING we have talked about since the beginning of the year. The exam will be on 12/14 and 12/15. Test corrections will be Friday 12/16 in class. Your semester grade is calculated using the following percentages:
1st Nine weeks - 40%
2nd Nine weeks - 40%
Semester Exam - 20%

The semester grade is the one that goes on your official record, and it is the grade that determines if you earn the .5 credit for the fall semester.

12/19 and 12/20 will be a movie day. The only one all year. Yay!

Please come and see me if you have any questions. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and come to class ready to work!

Mrs. Black

11/11/16

Good afternoon! Hard to believe it but we are halfway through this quarter. Interim grades are due Monday at 12:00pm. If you have any late work you need to turn in, it must be turned in to me by 8:30 Monday morning. Please check your student-vue to make sure everything is turned in.

This upcoming week is the last week for cell structure and function. On Monday/Tuesday we will completing a POGIL that explores the structures found in the eukaryotic cell, on Wednesday/Thursday you will be completing cell foldables that demonstrate you know what each organelle looks like and you know what they do and then on Friday I will be stamping for all three cell colorings and you will be taking a quiz on cell structure and function.

On Friday 11/4/16 I handed back the NOS, Biochem and Evolution test. Test corrections are due Monday 11/14/16 for odd classes and 11/15/16 for even classes. Late test corrections will not be accepted. Please make sure to get them turned in on time.

If you haven't turned in your cell crossword, Friday 11/18/16 is the last day I will accept it for a late grade. Please make sure you have turned it in.

That's all for now! Have a great weekend!

Mrs Black

10/30

Good morning everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I have finished grading the tests and the grades are in Student VUE. Before you freak out (FREAK OUT), remember that we will be doing test corrections. This will give you the opportunity to earn back 1/2 of the points you missed. However, I need to complete all the make up tests before I can hand the test back to you. For those of you that missed the test, you will notice you currently have a 0 for the test in the gradebook. You have lunch Monday - Wednesday of this week to get the test made up. After that, the 0 remains. Please come and see me to schedule that.

This weekend you should all be taking the cell structure and function notes. They can be found here. I also sent home a hard copy for everyone. These notes are long, and this next unit is long. It is also complicated so it is very important that you keep up with your notes, your notebook and your homework. Now that we have finished the first unit, you have a better idea of how the class runs and the importance of the activites we do in class everyday. Also I will be stamping for completed notes on Monday/Tuesday.

This week is chock full of learning!

Monday/Tuesday - go over the cell notes; I will also give you time in class to work on the (HUGE) crossword and the (INTRICATE) colorings

Wednesday/Thursday - We will compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells by completing a POGIL

Friday - Prokayotic vs Eukaryotic Foldable for your notebook

Enjoy your Sunday and I will see you Monday/Tuesday!

Mrs Black

10/25

Here we are on the eve of our first test! How exciting! The test covers the four sets of notes: What is Science?, Biochemistry, Darwin's Theory of Evolution and The History of Life. In 1st period, you are allowed to use your notebook. If you don't have all the notes copied down, print them out and put them into your notebook. This is your best chance of passing the test. Use the resources you have been given wisely. In 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th period, you are allowed to use a cheat sheet. You get one piece of printer paper, one side only. You can put whatever you want on that one side, but if you put anything on the other side, the cheat sheet will have to be recycled before the test. Please make sure you follow the rules.

The test is Wednesday/Thursday. I will not be in class on Wednesday. Once you have written your objective and agenda, all students that are at even seat need to move to the lab. Please find the table that matches your animal. The test is 47 multiple choice questions and 14 short answer questions. If you are found using a cell phone during the test, you will receive a 0 on the test. Put your phone away during the test. There's no text important enough to risk earning a 0 on a test.

Here is the link to the Kahoot we played in class. You can play it by opening two windows on a computer, or using a computer and a tablet/phone.
Good luck!

Mrs. Black

10/16/16

Happy Sunday everyone! I have 99% of the grading done. If you turned late work in Friday afternoon, I didn't get to it, but I will tomorrow. If you were absent on Thursday or Friday, you have a zero for the Natural Selection quiz. You need to come in either Monday at lunch or Tuesday at lunch to make that up.

This week we are focusing on the History of Life on earth. We will start Monday and Tuesday off with notes/recap of notes. Periods 5, 6, 7, and 8 need to have the notes taken by class time. I will be stamping at the beginning of class. The History of Life notes can be found HERE! Because of the PSAT, in 1st period we will also start a timeline foldable. All other classes will start the foldable on Wednesday/Thursday. Friday will be a catch up day depending on the period. Right now it looks like our first test will be 10/26 or 10/27. We will play the review game on 10/24 and 10/25. This test will cover the nature of science, biochemistry and the short evolution section. Period 1 will be allowed to use their notebooks. Periods 5, 6, 7 and 8 will be allowed to create and use a cheat sheet. I will give you more information as the date gets closer.

Please check StudentVue to see what you earned on your Natural Selection quiz. If you would like to retake the quiz, please fill out the following form. Due to test this week, and the fact I have lots of meetings, there are only four options. Please select an option and put a reminder in your phone so that you don't forget. All retake requests must be made by Tuesday afternoon. Have a great evening and see you tomorrow or Tuesday!

Mrs. Black

10/9/16

Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying your long weekend. There are a few things I want to make sure everyone knows.

1. Friday October 14th is the last day I will take grades for the 1st nine weeks. Any assignment that hasn't been turned in must be turned in by Friday October 14th, or it will remain a 0. Also, if you missed any of the stamps during this nine weeks, come and see me at lunch and I will stamp. If you are not sure if you are missing anything, here is the list for period 1, and here is the list for periods 5, 6, 7, and 8.

2. We will be having a notebook quiz Tuesday 10/11/16 and Wednesday 10/12/16. A lot of questions will come from the Table of Contents. If your TOC is not up to date, you can find the TOC for period 1 here, and for periods 5, 6, 7, and 8 here.

3. I have finished updating grades. There are a number of papers that were turned in with no name. These will be posted on the Beyonce fume hood starting Tuesday morning. Please make sure to check the fume hood for your missing work before getting stressed out about earning a 0. :)

This week we will wrap up our natural selection mini unit by watching a video on antibiotic resistance in bacteria and you will create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) poster on antibiotic resistance and natural selection.

Enjoy these next two days. See you Tuesday/Wednesday!

Here are the three colorings I will be stamping for next week. You will notice that I did not do any highlighting. You need to read the text and highlight the important information. Let me know if you have any questions. I know they are upside down, sorry!

Good afternoon everyone! We are in our 6th week of class and things are running pretty smooth. We have taken our first real quiz and grades are entered into the gradebook. If you are not happy with your quiz grade, you can sign up for a retake using the form at the bottom of this announcement. Please sign up by end of day Wednesday. If you missed the quiz on Wednesday 9/21/16, you will notice that you have a 0 for the quiz. You need to come in either in the morning or at lunch to retake that quiz. Any quiz not retaken by Friday 9/30/16, will remain a 0.

We have a lot of activities planned for the next few weeks. We are currently studying Darwin's theory of evolution. We will watch a video called "The Making of a Theory" on Wed/Thur that give insight on the observations both Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace used to develop their theories. You will then get a chance to write as one of them and explain how natural selection works to change populations over time. Next week on Mon/Tues we will be studying the Rock Pocket Mouse and looking at how the environment can be a selective pressure to change populations. Wed/Thur we will be looking at how natural selection works to create antibiotic resistant bacteria. This is a 4 day week due to fall break. When we return from fall break we will watch a video called "Hunting the Nightmare Bacteria" that shows why antibiotic resistance is an issue. The end of the quarter is October 18th.

I am looking forward to these next few weeks. I think they will be fun and full of learning!
